Biomimetic Formulas

The skin has its own sophisticated protective system. Lipids, natural moisturising factors and components of the acid mantle work together to help maintain hydration, support barrier function and protect the skin from its external environment. Biomimetic formulation takes inspiration from this biology. Rather than approaching skin care simply as a collection of active ingredients, biomimetic formulations consider the environment in which those ingredients are delivered — using components and structures designed to resemble, complement or support those naturally found within healthy skin.

This philosophy is one of the reasons I work with Dr. Spiller Biomimetic SkinCare within my treatments and selected home-care programmes.

The Dr. Spiller Philosophy

Dr. Horst Spiller began developing his approach to cosmetic emulsions in the 1960s. His philosophy centred on working with the natural functions of the skin rather than continually disrupting them, with particular emphasis on maintaining hydration and respecting the skin's protective barrier. Central to this approach is Dr. Spiller's proprietary HY-TEC™ water-in-oil emulsion system. In a water-in-oil emulsion, microscopic droplets of water are dispersed within a continuous lipid phase. Dr. Spiller's system surrounds the aqueous phase with a lipid environment designed to resemble aspects of the skin's own surface lipids. The formulations incorporate lipid components corresponding to classes naturally associated with the skin barrier and sebum — including fatty acids, triglycerides, wax esters and other lipid-like materials — alongside humectants and ingredients selected to support hydration.

Why the formulation matters

For me, skin care is not simply about asking: What active ingredient is in this product? It is equally important to consider: How is it formulated? How does it interact with the skin barrier? What is carrying the active ingredient? And is the formulation appropriate for the condition of the skin? A sophisticated active ingredient cannot be considered entirely separately from its delivery system. This is what I find particularly interesting about biomimetic formulation: the formulation itself becomes part of the approach to supporting skin function.

Working With the Skin

There are times when the skin may benefit from renewal or corrective intervention, but there are also times when what it needs most is protection, hydration and restoration of barrier function. My approach is therefore not based on continually stimulating or exfoliating the skin. It is about understanding its condition first, then deciding when to renew, support, protect or simply leave the skin to recover. Dr. Spiller's biomimetic philosophy complements this beautifully.
